I grew up hankering to be a game warden like a great uncle of mine had back in the 1960's. My first career involved chasing wildfires in the interior of Alaska. After eleven years, I hung up my pulaski and took a three-year hiatus by guiding five-day wilderness raft trips on the Middle Fork and Main Salmon rivers. Some of those trips could have gone on for the rest of my life, but instead they brought me back to my roots and I took a game warden job. Chasing poachers lasted almost a quarter of a century.

In retirement, my wife and I chase trout from our teardrop when the days are long and warm. Writing? I save it for when the days are short and the air is cold enough to snap a stick.
